The IET has announced the finalists for its Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards.

The event, which celebrates the outstanding achievements of female engineers, is to be presented on the 6th December 2012 at IET London: Savoy Place.

It’s a great event that shows how women engineers can get the job done every bit as good as the blokes can. We recently ran a story about how the NICEIC is campaigning for more female engineers to be trained, breaking down the stigma that it’s a man’s world.  Award ceremonies such as this showcase the talent of female engineers, and it’s great to see the IET awarding those who’ve gone the extra mile.

This year’s candidates include a structural engineer who worked on London’s giant new building, The Shard, and a real time FRACAS (Failure Review and Corrective Action System) analyst who worked on Euro Fighter Typhoon Aircrafts.

The full of finalists is:

· Roma Agrawal (WSP Group)

· Yewande Akinola (ARUP)

· Jessica Jones (LGS)

· Philippa Riddoch (BAE Systems)

· Charlotte Tingley (BAE Systems)

Gabby Logan, gymnast and TV presenter, will be handing out the awards in December.  She said:

“I’m honoured and really excited to be asked to present this year’s event. I fully support efforts that encourage young women to take jobs in traditionally male-dominated industries, such as engineering and technology, and to show them support early in their careers.”

If you’re in London over the Christmas period, why not pop along to the event? It’s free to attend!
