Self-powered relays are a critical part of your protection system. However, testing self-powered relays in renewable power stations, distribution power plants, and smart grids can be difficult. Helpfully, Megger has created a free technical guide that details how you can test self-powered relays using a Megger SVERKER 900 3-phase Relay & Substation Test System.

About the SVERKER 900

Megger’s SVERKER 900 is a multifunctional relay and substation test system optimised for primary and three-phase secondary testing of protection devices including self-powered, electromechanical, static, and numerical protection relays. It’s intended for use as part of the commissioning and maintenance of renewable power stations, distribution plants, and smart grids.  Please see the video below for a quick overview of the Megger SVERKER 900.

Megger has updated its range of SVERKER 900s to include more fit for testing electromechanical relays, sensitive earth fault protection, and reverse power motor protection. Its new design means users no longer require a separate low current adapter.

The SVERKER 900 also features frequency protection and ROCOF (rate of change of frequency) making it the first relay test set to conform with the new IEC standard for testing frequency-based protection (IEC 60255-181:2019). Furthermore, it supports quick wiring and signal control, LV breaker testing, and other primary injections using the Constant Current mode. Additionally, the SVERKER 900 offers extended functionality in the PreFault-Fault Instrument and improved testing for miniature and moulded case circuit breakers (MCB and MCCBs). All the Megger SVERKER 900’s tests and functions can be accessed via its responsive touchscreen interface.
