During a network cabling operation twisted-pair copper data cables will need to be tested to the TIA/ISO standards.  Certified copper cable testing (like fiber cable testing) is probably the most rigorous sort of cable testing you will do.

Copper certification test tools supply mostly Pass or Fail information against the tests defined in the certification standards.  Each tester will determine Pass or Fail results in accordance with defined ranges of frequency limits, based on industry standards such as ISO/IEC standard 11801:2002 or ANSI/TIA/EIA-568.  There are essentially two types of tester:

  • Verification testers for basic continuity function checks, such as toning and wiremap.  Used when networks are extended, changed or moved; they sometimes include a Time Domain Reflectometers.
  • Qualification testers are used to determine whether a network qualifies for certain data network jobs.  For example is it able to handle faster network speeds or technologies such as VOiP, Gigabit Ethernet or 100BASE-TX?  They are useful for network technicians who want to upgrade a system to higher speeds or to analyse connectivity problems.
