About Thermocouple & Temperature Calibrators
Although it is common to find a Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) referred to as a thermocouple, an RTD is actually more accurate in its measurements than a traditional device. Many modern thermocouples are, in fact, an RTD; they can also be even more accurately classified as a Platinum Resistance Thermometer (PRT), since they invariably have platinum sensors.
The basic operating principle remains the same; the RTD element (usually platinum these days) is used for temperature correlation against the subject being probed. Since the RTD element’s resistance profile to different temperatures is already known it can be used to measure the temperature of the subject by essentially comparing differences in resistance. Luckily, all this clever physics is wrapped up in a neat and affordable RTD calibrator which is as portable and easy to use as many other useful measurement meters.
