Each transducer has either a CF-LP clamping fixture for small pipes (between 0.5”/ 15mm to 2”/ 50mm) or PT clamping fixture for medium/larger pipes (above 2”/ 50mm). The GE / Panametric Transport® PT900 Portable Ultrasonic Liquid Flow Meter is the latest in the GE’s Panametrics range of clamp-on ultrasonic liquid flow meters. This model is both as rugged and effective as GE’s previous PT878 (available here) and also takes flow measurements via GE’s patented correlation Transit-Time™ technique (see below for a brief explanation).

The GE / Panametric Transport® PT900 Portable Ultrasonic Liquid Flow Meter’s clamp-on design and compatibility with a multitude of transducers ensures that it is suitable for use with a variety of pipe (lined and unlined) sizes and fluids, including potable water, wastewater, cooling and heating water, ultrapure water, water/glycol solutions, crude oil, refined hydrocarbons, chemicals and beverages.  It can also be used to measure non-conductive fluids, gases and steam as well as fluids with small amounts of entrained solids or gas bubbles.

GE’s Patented Correlation Transit-Time™ Technique- Brief Explanation

(For further information please see GE’s Instruction Document  ‘To Clamp or Not to Clamp’ listed under the Technical Specifications).

Briefly, the Transit-Time™ technique utilises acoustic signals to determine the velocity and direction of flow within a pipe.

For this technique to be effective it requires two ultrasonic transducers. Both transducers initially function as a transmitter of acoustic pulses and then as a receiver of these pulses. The time interval between the second transducer receiving the acoustic signals and the first transducer emitting them is measured, and vice versa.

If the pipe’s fluid is stagnant the upstream and downstream times will be identical as there is no upstream resistance. Conversely, if the liquid is flowing then the upstream time interval will be greater than the downstream time interval as the pulses will encounter resistance from the flowing liquid. In the event that flow is present, the difference between the transit times is proportional to the flow velocity; whilst the time interval's sign will indicate the flow's direction.

There are many advantages to using flowmeters with Transit-Time™:
