About Compound Microscopes

A compound microscope is an upright microscope that uses two sets of lenses to obtain a higher magnification. To obtain this, the objective lens is compounded by the eyepiece lens. It provides a two-dimensional image and typically provides magnification in the range of 40× - 1000×.

Compound microscopes are used to view small samples that cannot be identified with the naked eye. These samples are typically placed on a slide under the microscope. While the eyepieces and the objective lenses create high magnification, a condenser beneath the stage focuses the light directly into the sample.
