Did you know there are more than 477 data centres in the UK? Data centres or server farms facilitate everything from email to online banking to streaming. In short, everything critical to modern life. Increasing reliance on digital services and advances in AI mean the UK is set to increase data centres by almost a fifth (approximately 100).[1]  However, planting a new server farm isn’t simple. Data centres draw huge amounts of energy, which is a problem both for the environment and the UK’s ailing power grid. So, how can the UK guarantee future computing power without compromising Net Zero targets or overloading an old power grid? Unsurprisingly, the answers lie in skills, maintenance, and product innovation. In this article, we consider some of the steps necessary for the seamless integration of data centres within the UK’s infrastructure.
