Thermal Images Show Impact of Raynaud’s Phenomenon and HAVS
27th February 2026
Raynaud’s Phenomenon causes blood vessels to spasm, temporarily restricting blood flow to extremities such as fingers and toes, which can leave them visibly pale and cold. This condition is estimated to affect 20% of the global adult population, including up to 10 million in the UK.[1] Similarly, Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), sometimes known as vibration white finger, occurs when nerves, blood vessels, and joints are damaged due to long-term exposure to vibrations. This results in restricted circulation and temperature drops in the hands and feet. It’s thought that nearly two million people in the UK are at risk of HAVS.[2] Thankfully, thermography is showing some promise as a non-invasive screening technique.[3] This is not the first time thermal cameras have been used as a preliminary assessment tool. Thermal imaging has been used as a non-contact method of detecting elevated skin temperature, a non-invasive way to pinpoint the source of cattle lameness, and a non-destructive assessment of tree health. These applications highlight the broader potential of thermography as a rapid, non-contact method of identifying physiological change.
