The FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera functions as an effective preliminary measure for preventing the possible spread of infection. This battery-powered, US FDA-registered thermal imager with an integrated touchscreen display has been optimised for detecting elevated skin temperature. Non-contact measurement allows all parties to maintain safe social distancing.
Elevated skin temperature can be suggestive of a fever, which is a common symptom of many illnesses. The FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera can be used alongside body thermometers to identify people with above-average skin temperature who may need to self-isolate and/or undergo further medical tests. The FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera CANNOT be used to identify or diagnose illnesses.
Thermal Imaging
The FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera has an infrared resolution of 464 x 348px, a frame rate of 30Hz, and can measure temperatures between -15°C and 45°C/ 59°F and 113°F to an accuracy of ±0.3°C/ ±0.5°F.
There are two versions of the FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera available that vary in regards to their lens size, field-of-view and thermal sensitivity. Please see the table below for further details.

FLIR Screen-EST Mode
To enable quick, accurate and consistent elevated-skin-temperature screening, the FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera includes a dedicated FLIR Screen-EST mode. This mode functions by comparing the subject's (the person being screened) skin temperature to the average skin temperature plus the user-specified tolerance, e.g. 36°C +1°C. If the subject’s skin temperature is within this range a PASS indicator is displayed. However, if his/her temperature exceeds the upper limit an audible alarm is triggered and a FAIL indicator is displayed. Persons who trigger these alerts MUST have their body temperatures verified using a thermometer optimised for this purpose.
To account for changing ambient temperatures that occur naturally throughout the day, the FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera calculates the average skin-temperature accumulatively using subjects’ measurements. The FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera can be set to take samples and update the average automatically or manually. The FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera features a Bluetooth-enabled remote operation button to enable remote manual sampling and updates.
In addition to this, the FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera includes a visual positioning guide to help the user conduct consistent and reliable screening.
Using the FLIR Screen-EST mode does not compromise the subjects’ privacy. Thermal images captured using this mode will not display any identifying features. Furthermore, thermal images and/or any personal information are not saved.
FLIR Screen-EST Desktop Software
The FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera can be used with the FLIR Screen-EST Desktop Software (NOT included) and a monitor (NOT included) to set up permanent, hands-free screening stations. To this end, the FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera features simple video connectivity and an integrated tripod mount.
When used in this capacity, the FLIR E86-EST Handheld Temperature-Screening Thermal Camera will automatically begin temperature screening upon detection of a human face. If the subject’s skin temperature is within the accepted range (the accumulative average value plus the user-specified tolerance) a green tick is displayed on the monitor. If his/her temperature exceeds the upper limit a red cross is displayed; individuals who trigger this alert MUST have their temperatures verified using a body thermometer.
The entire screening process is viewable on the connected monitor, providing subjects with greater peace of mind.
