On Thursday 22nd May 2025, PASS hosted a free workshop by EA Technology at our Stockton-on-Tees training centre. Aimed at maintenance engineers, electrical engineers, condition monitoring specialists, and high voltage maintenance specialists, EA Technology’s free workshop, with live demonstrations and practical sessions (and a quiz!), focused on using the UltraTEV Plus 2 to find, analyse, and document instances of partial discharge (PD) within high voltage substations.

PASS Teams up with EA Technology to Tackle Substation Partial Discharge

EA Technology’s Key Accounts and Business Development Manager, Phil Smethurst, explains that as there is “a lot of interest” in partial discharge detection and ultrasonic solutions, EA Technology is keen to capitalise on this opportunity. Partnering with PASS Ltd, one of EA Technology’s newer distributors, provided “the perfect opportunity to effectively reach a customer base which is one we [EA Technology] wouldn’t necessarily reach directly ourselves.” Phil explains that partnering with PASS has enabled EA Technology to spread the message of “good practice” and how this can be achieved using ultrasonic detection tools, specifically EA Technology’s UltraTEV Plus 2.

PASS’ echoes these sentiments, remarking that:

“As a leading supplier of high voltage (HV) training and specialist test and measurement equipment, we want to spread awareness of partial discharge risk and prevention. EA Technology is a leader in this industry, supporting professionals with safe working practices and technical expertise. Partial discharge detection, management, and correction are niche applications; however, by working with EA Technology, we can help businesses detect faults early, improve reliability, and minimise downtime through implementing correct equipment and effective techniques.”

Discovering the Power of Partial Discharge with EA Technology

Attended by high voltage professionals from EDF, Natural Energy, and F R Townsend & Company Limited (to name a few), EA Technology’s workshop was delivered by Phil Smethurst, EA Technology’s Key Accounts and Business Development Manager. Paying particular attention to the detection and correction of internal and surface partial discharge, Phil revealed how and where partial discharge forms, explaining that PD causes 85% of failures in substations. He also disclosed, to everyone’s great relief, that it is possible to detect 44% of all faults using partial discharge techniques, provided you know what the procedures are and how to interpret results. Phil then went on to explain how the EA Technology UltraTEV Plus 2 can be used to detect, measure, and analyse PD using TEV measurements and ultrasonic detection.

Optimised for ease of use, attendees saw, firsthand, how user-friendly the UltraTEV Plus 2 is, thanks to its combined touchscreen and button interface. Moreover, hands-on demonstrations effectively illustrated ways EA Technology's UltraTEV Plus 2 simplifies results interpretation. Offering a numerical and graphic (PRPD plot) display of TEV measurements, users can analyse data in real-time. However, if this is beyond the experience of the user, then the individual can rely on the UltraTEV Plus 2’s evaluation of readings, which is summarised and displayed on the screen in one simple sentence, e.g., “of no concern”.

To complement the UltraTEV Plus 2’s measurement and analysis capabilities, EA Technology offers a Cloud-based Survey Management application for organising and assessing data, as well as creating reports. EA Technology also provides an eclectic array of accessories designed to improve the accuracy and convenience of PD inspections.

After illustrating several best practices and highlighting the importance of conducting both TEV measurements and ultrasonic surveys, the cohort had the opportunity to test EA Technology’s UltraTEV Plus 2 and accessories on PASS Ltd’s mock substations in our modern high-voltage training centre.

In addition to serving as an effective method of testing the functionality, sophistication, and intuitiveness of tools such as EA Technology’s UltraTEV Plus 2, PASS’ mock substations enable us to deliver expert high-voltage training in a state-of-the-art facility. We are proud to offer this rare but essential service. If high-voltage training courses are of interest, please visit our dedicated training website.

Practical session complete, our cohort returned to the training room for a ten-question, multiple-choice quiz. The atmosphere was tense, but our attendees came through in spectacular style, scoring ten out of ten – a ringing endorsement of the course if there ever was one!

Attendee Testimonial

“We both found the morning very informative and well presented. We both can see where PD testing can add to our business.”
