Precise & Careful Bee Removal: The Teledyne FLIR C5 in Action

To demonstrate the efficacy of the Teledyne FLIR C5 Thermal Camera, we collaborated with Sean Mooney from the National Pest Technician Association (NPTA) and UK Bee Removers (UKBR). We accompanied him to a bee removal mission at Harlsey Hall in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. Armed with the Teledyne FLIR C5, Sean successfully located and removed three nests with remarkable precision and efficiency.

Picking up on the heat signature of the bees, the Teledyne FLIR C5 Thermal Camera efficiently and easily pinpointed the hive's heart. Sean explains how this is useful. He tells us that observing where the bees enter a building is not sufficient to know where the nest is located. Noting that, while the thermal imager cannot provide a comprehensive picture of the exact size of the colony, it does identify an accurate starting point. This means his team can target their invasive methods, which are used to determine the size of the colony, to minimise damage. As a consequence, fewer resources, such as scaffolding, are required, costs are reduced, and jobs are completed quicker.

“You have to remember that the thermal technology is only going to show you where the heat is. This is why it’s important that we understand the outer perimeters of [the hive]. If that brood nest is in the back but it’s been here for years and years and there [are] lots of stores that the bees are crawling over, [then their] honeycomb could come all the way out [to the edge of the roof] with no heat/temperature. It [the Teledyne FLIR C5] gives the centre [of the hive]... [and] it means that we don’t have to take the whole place apart to find out where we’re going to start.”

Benefits of the Teledyne FLIR C5 for Bee Removal: Swift Detection, Time Savings, & Enhanced Safety

Advanced Thermal Imaging & Intuitive Design

The Teledyne FLIR C5 harnesses cutting-edge thermal imaging technology to provide a significant advantage in the field. As a result, it revolutionises the way you uncover hidden bee nests. Able to detect temperature variations, this compact and user-friendly camera pinpoints the location of hives. This is because the Teledyne FLIR C5 identifies heat emitted by bees, thereby allowing you to find the centre of the colony.

An invaluable tool, the Teledyne FLIR C5 has a 160 x 120px thermal imager and features a rugged, sealed design. Useful functions, such as MSX imaging and Picture-in-Picture mode, make your job easier in the short and long term. For example, use Picture-in-Picture mode to capture a thermal image within the context of a digital scene. This is perfect for documenting the exact location of bumble bee colonies for later extraction.

By incorporating the Teledyne FLIR C5 into your pest control operations, you unlock an array of benefits:

  1. Swift and Accurate Detection: gone are the days of relying solely on external visual inspections, time-consuming stethoscope checks, and destructive borescope investigations. As the Teledyne FLIR C5 detects heat emitted by bees, you can, therefore, pinpoint the exact location of the hive centre swiftly.
  2. Time and Cost Savings: with the Teledyne FLIR C5, extensive property inspections and trial-and-error invasive measures become a thing of the past. By efficiently identifying nest centres, you save valuable time and resources. For example, you will be able to predict how much scaffolding you'll require and know exactly where to put it. Moreover, thermal imaging allows you to target invasive methods precisely and serve more clients effectively.
  3. Improved Safety: bee removal can pose risks, especially when nests are hidden in challenging spots or areas with a dense human population. The Teledyne FLIR C5 helps you identify potential hazards by revealing heat patterns and their intensity. Consequently, you can plan removal strategies to minimise the chances of stings, damage, and disruption.
