What Changes Have Been Made to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations?

2022 amendments to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations reflect the increasing need to meet consumer and government commitments to achieving net-zero by 2050. The most significant change to the IET 18th Edition Wiring Regulations is the introduction of a new section (Part 8) concerned with Prosumer (someone who produces and consumes electricity) Low Voltage Electrical Installations, which covers:

  • Energy efficiency measures
  • Interface with the smart grid
  • Management of electrical consumption
  • Management of renewable sources of energy
  • Energy storage

Other notable updates to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations include revisions to:

  • Fire safety requirements
  • Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs)
  • Protection against over voltages
  • Special locations (Part 7)

When do the 18th Edition A2:2022 Changes Come into Effect?

BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2 was released on the 28th March 2022 and came into immediate effect. However, the first amendment to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018+A1:2020) was not instantly withdrawn. Electricians can work to these specifications until the 27th September 2022, at which point Amendment 1 will be officially removed from use. After this date, all work must conform to Amendment 2 (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022).[1]
