A clean hospital waiting area with doctors in blue scrubs and white coats serves as the background. In the bottom left corner a Fluke ii900 emerges from a grey circle with a light blue border. On the right, large, white text reads "Mediclinic Group Uses Fluke ii900 To Improve Sustainability & Patient Safety".

Mediclinic Group is an international hospital group with facilities in South Africa, Namibia, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates. Committed to ensuring patient safety as well as meeting sustainability targets, Mediclinic Group turned to Fluke’s ii900 Industrial Acoustic Imager in an effort to locate costly, wasteful, and potentially hazardous gas leaks quickly and easily.[1]

The Problem: Gas Leaks

Hospitals use medical gases, such as nitrous oxide (N2O) and oxygen (O2), extensively throughout their sites. These gases are produced by separating air using high levels of energy. Gas escaping through leaks in hospital systems not only poses a risk to patient safety but also has a negative effect on the environment and hospital overheads. Realising this, Mediclinic Group decided to locate and fix these gas leaks in order to improve patient safety, increase sustainability, decrease its carbon footprint, and reduce the use of natural resources.

The Solution: Fluke’s ii900 Industrial Acoustic Imager

Beginning in Mediclinic’s South African hospitals, staff used a Fluke ii900 Industrial Acoustic Imager to find leaks in pipes ferrying nitrous oxide from the basement to operating theatres and those transporting oxygen to patients’ beds. As the Fluke ii900 overlays a sound map onto a digital image, users of all experiences could pinpoint leaks quickly and easily without the need for specialist training. Furthermore, the Fluke ii900 has been designed to enable inspections from distances of up to 50m, allowing staff to conduct rapid visual checks from a convenient and safe location.

The Results

Detecting leaks meant Mediclinic Group could fix them efficiently, thereby reducing wastage percentages and improving the hospitals’ sustainability, carbon footprint, and safety.

Testimonials

Petrus Swanepoel, Mediclinic’s Southern Africa Sustainability Manager, said

“There is a pressing need for companies around the world to act more sustainably and the Fluke ii900 Industrial Acoustic Imager enabled us to do this by minimising the leakage of any medical gases and our increased use of oxygen during the pandemic, with its associated costs, focused our attention on the benefits of identifying leaks. We are delighted that the equipment has been able to make such a big difference to patient safety and to minimising wastage.”[2]

Fluke’s Francesco Pagin added

“The ii900 Industrial Acoustic Imager has become highly popular as a tool for detecting leaks in compressed air systems, so this innovative application at the Mediclinic hospitals for identifying medical gas leakage is a really interesting new area of use. It opens up opportunities for maintenance and sustainability teams across a range of other sectors to boost efficiencies and sustainability levels by incorporating this powerful yet easy-to-use tool into their inspection and testing regimes.”[3]
