  4. Top 10 Things Electricians Wish You Wouldn’t Do

On the left of the image there are five diagonal, vertical slices of images on a blue background From left to right they are: white wires connected to an internet hub; a close-up of a lightbulb; a man screwing in the front panel of an electrical outlet; a table of tools; a close-up of wires with the metal ends exposed. On the right of the image is a large orange box on a blue background with the words "Top 10 Things Electricians Wish You Wouldn't Do" in large, white text. A recent survey of electricians revealed the ten most common and dangerous electrical mistakes made in British homes. Hundreds of UK electricians were questioned about which electrical errors they encountered most often and were then asked to rank these mistakes in the order of severity. The investigation comes in the wake of findings that 49% of Brits have interfered with their home’s electrics. We have summarised the results of the report, initially published in ECN magazine, below.[1] Continue reading →

Impending net-zero targets as well as an ongoing labour shortage and skills gap make it more imperative than ever to address gender disparity across the trades. When it comes to trade sectors, such as heating, electricity, and plumbing, women represent an untapped talent pool. Embracing equity to make these career paths more palatable to women is an excellent way to attract female workers to the industries. Training women in the latest techniques and technologies will go a long way to addressing the labour and skills shortfall and helping the nation to meet net-zero targets. 8. 6 Things to Consider Before Buying an Acoustic Camera

On the left is an image of a man holding the Teledyne FLIR Si124 Acoustic imager pointing it at a collection of electricity pylons. The plant is covered in snow. On the right of the image large, black text on a white background reads "6 Things to Consider Before Buying an Acoustic Camera". Acoustic imaging cameras, otherwise known as sonic or ultrasonic imagers, are popular amongst facilities managers, especially those working in industrial or high-voltage settings. They are extremely easy to use and highly effective at finding air/pressurised leaks and partial discharge/corona. Acoustic cameras detect audible and/or ultrasonic sound; convert it into a sound map; then superimpose this map onto a digital image of the inspection area, allowing you to pinpoint the source of the leak or electrical fault accurately, simply, and quickly. As sonic imaging is a relatively new preventative maintenance/inspection technology, it can be difficult to know what makes a good acoustic camera. Thankfully, Teledyne FLIR has outlined six things to look for when purchasing an ultrasonic imager. Continue reading →
